The downside of Helium.com for writers

I have been indulging a bit in creative writing for years now, mostly unpublished works, and one day I was posting a new article on my blog, www.rnonline.blogspot.com, and I came upon a Google Ad for Helium. I had never heard of this company before, and although we are not supposed to click on our own Google ads, just this once, I did so. So began my learning experience on Helium. Hopefully, this article will serve to answer some questions about the downside of Helium.com for writers.

I registered that day and thought, great, maybe finally, I will be recognized for the great author/poet that I am! Maybe this will be the answer to making a little extra revenue so that I don't have to work so darn hard! Yeah, right. I posted about 7 or 8 poems on the site that day and then decided that I would reply to one of the publishers requests for writing on a topic. It only paid $20, but I thought, what the heck, it's a start and maybe that certain publisher will like me, and history would be made! Again, just a pipe dream! I have many!

What they do not tell you when you start writing for these so called requests on Helium, is that many other people have also written on the same topic and the publisher picks who they like the best. So, I proceeded to research material on this stupid article about the name Michael, for about 4 hours. I had a great story to tell about the name, came up with a clever introduction, had a well thought out and organized template for the meat and potatoes of the story and a strong conclusion. I thought great, 4 hours work, now I will get paid $20. Hey, that is a pizza and a six-pack. At least it is better than nothing, right? WRONG.....as soon as I submitted the article, about 24 other articles appeared on the exact same topic and mine ended up being #13 amongst them! I was appalled that I spent that much time, on that one article, and now was most likely not even going to get recognized by the publisher. Unbearably, I was sure that that there were many other more witty banterings about the name Michael, above and beyond mine. Which, thus far, has proven correct.

Another thing that really bothered me about Helium, was that on that particular day, as I stated previously, I submitted about 7 or 8 poems, some of my best poems, in my opinion. Although I am no Shakespeare, I am slightly interesting and deserve some sort of monitary recognition for my contribution of my material to these people....and I was lead to believe by their ad that THIS IS WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. So, I did expect something, even if it were only a couple of bucks. Much to my dismay, however, when I clicked on to the earnings page after a couple of days, I HAD ONLY EARNED 0.02.....THAT IS TWO CENTS FOLKS! At this point, I was just so frustrated and literally insulted, that I had to exit the site, stage right, just to breathe again!

So, the moral of the story, here, is.......read all the information about the site before you start to post there, especially if there is money involved. Also, keep your expectations low. Making money online is not easy. If you do not have patience and perserverance, you will not succeed. I have yet to earn the big bucks in these types of venues, heck, not even the little ones, but it is a relatively new venture for me and I know if I keep trying, I will succeed, eventually. I hope that this hub has helped in some way clear up any misconception you may have about Helium.com. I learned the hard way and hopefully I have helped you to avoid the same mistakes.

Dear DJPTHN1,

I like to write on Helium too-but not for money. I think it's a great forum to "test" your work out and see how peers rank your work. I've blogged about it on my blogspot- http://geekiegirl29.blogspot.com.

Originally, when I joined, I wrote one article, which quickly plummeted to 29/30-leapfrogged it, and now it's ranked 17 or 19/30. Since, I went on an article spree and wrote several more and nearly doubled my earnings in one month-from a mere $.52 to $1.10, respectively :) Anyway, much of the online writing for me is about receiving comments, feedback form a virtual community. Def. won't quit my dayjob with my buck earned with Helium, but a smile creeps to my face every time I see a new article ranked #1. (It's that ego side of me I can't seem to shake, so my way of embracing it!)

Cheers!

Sounds like your experiences with Helium are somewhat similar to mine -

I posted the following:

By the way - I'm really impressed with your score on HubPages, bearing in mind you only joined 2 weeks ago. Well Done!

I'm new to HubPages but find it has much more potential thanHelium.

Best wishes,

Richard

Thank you Rik, I thought I should add some tidbits to this hub as I have dealt with them recently in a negative sense, so to speak, just haven't had the time, but maybe I should......I know nothing really about the scores, I just write and out they pop!!!!I am sure I could do better, but that is the OCD in me@@@!!!!!!!!!Thanks for reading.

Your experience is typical of so many - and what's worse, Helium now has your poems forever! I also wrote a Hub on this subject which explains how it all works. It's a pity Helium doesn't explain it better upfront!

Helium censored some my stuff for obscenity...those fucking bastards.

Hi - I just noticed your question. Yes, you can publish your Helium articles elsewhere PROVIDED the "elsewhere" allows it. Some publishers insist on first rights. Also, you have to consider the issue of duplicate content - your article is already on the web on Helium, so if you published it here on HP, for instance, it's going to get caught in the duplicate content filter.

BTW it's not Helium's fault that your article got censored. Adsense is insisting that all Adsense monetized sites are G rated - obscenity is not allowed. HP is the same. So if you want to earn from Adsense, get over it!

YOU ARE AGAIN BRILLIANT! You are the only one I know to speak openly about Helium Hell. I am totally discouraged by them as well.

I was going to spruce this one up a bit, as there are other things I have found out and this was one of the first hubs I wrote. If you look at my others, they are more hubpage savvy, so to speak or at least more pleasing to the eye....anyway, thanks for you somment, Erinn.

Nice to see your candid review. My initial impression put my Helium submissions on indefinite hold. I'll now take them off my list altogether:) Your style and experience are strong so keep writing. BTW, if you have not done so already you'll definitely want to submit articles to eZineArticles.com.

Hi,

I don't know whether you continue to be at Helium or not. But I became a member in Helium some 8 months back and have posted some 120 articles there. I agree with you that penny earning from Helium is quite dismal. But they are periodically coming out with special promotions in which they pay 1 to 3 dollars per article.

Ever since I joined Helium, I have earned about 160$ which I feel is not too bad.

Please see my article:

I HAVE LINKED THIS ARTICLE OF YOURS THERE! (You may also link my article to this if you wish).
